In a significant move ahead of Diwali, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that 73 lakh farmers have received an initial payment of ₹5,000 each as drought relief. This announcement comes as the state grapples with severe drought conditions, with 85% of its regions declared drought-hit due to inadequate rainfall this year. Fadnavis assured that the remaining payments would be processed within the next two days, addressing concerns about delays linked to banking issues.

The Maharashtra government has recognized the urgent need for financial support, particularly as farmers prepare for the festive season. Fadnavis stated that nearly 95% of eligible farmers are expected to receive their payments shortly. He emphasized the government's commitment to supporting farmers, indicating that ministers would personally visit their homes to celebrate Diwali, reinforcing the administration's connection with the agricultural community.

In addition to the drought relief, Fadnavis revealed that ₹4,764 crore has been transferred to 4.86 lakh farmers under the loan waiver scheme, with Marathwada receiving the largest share. Overall, around 21 lakh farmers have benefited from loan waivers, with the verification process for beneficiaries ongoing. The government aims to ensure that assistance reaches all those in need, particularly in drought-affected areas.

Fadnavis also addressed the ongoing sugarcane farmers' protests, urging a peaceful resolution through dialogue between farmers and sugar mills. He highlighted the detrimental impact of the protests on farmers' livelihoods and reiterated the government's role as a mediator in the dispute over Fair and Remunerative Prices (FRP). The Chief Minister's remarks reflect a broader strategy to engage with farmers and address their grievances directly.

Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government is committed to enhancing water availability in drought-stricken regions, particularly in Marathwada, where water scarcity has been a long-standing issue. Fadnavis assured that significant progress has been made in water supply projects, which are nearing completion. As the festive season approaches, the government remains focused on ensuring that farmers receive the necessary support to navigate these challenging times.
