In a significant move to support the agricultural sector, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has declared an advance drought relief payment of ₹5,000 for approximately 1.5 crore farmers across the state. This announcement was made during a Cabinet meeting, reflecting the government's response to the escalating drought-like conditions affecting various regions. The total financial allocation for this initiative amounts to ₹7,500 crore.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that farmers receive the full amount of the relief payment without any deductions by banks. He instructed officials to issue clear directives to prevent any reductions from the advance payments, highlighting the necessity for farmers to benefit fully from this assistance. This proactive approach aims to alleviate the financial burden on farmers grappling with the adverse effects of drought.

Fadnavis addressed the media in Wardha, drawing comparisons between Maharashtra's relief measures and those of Karnataka. He acknowledged that while ₹5,000 may not fully compensate for a farmer's losses, it serves as crucial immediate support. He noted that this is the first time such advance financial assistance has been provided to farmers before December, marking a significant change in the state's approach to agricultural support. Previously, farmers with small landholdings received minimal aid, but now every eligible farmer will receive at least ₹5,000, with additional compensation to follow.

The announcement comes amid rising concerns regarding the impact of drought on the farming community. Fadnavis pointed out that Karnataka has only provided ₹2,500 in relief despite facing severe drought conditions. He faced criticism from opposition leaders regarding the aid amount but defended the initiative by stating that those who do not experience financial struggles cannot comprehend the significance of such support for farmers.

In addition to the financial aid, Fadnavis revealed that the state has now declared drought in 305 talukas, an increase from the previous count of 265. During a press conference in Mumbai, he assured that the government is expediting relief efforts this year to assist farmers dealing with crop losses and financial distress due to the ongoing drought conditions.
