Maharashtra State Power Generation Co. Ltd. (MAHAGENCO) has announced a tender for a substantial Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, seeking to develop 500 MW of capacity with a total storage of 1,600 MWh. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy storage capabilities across the state and is structured under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, which includes a 15-year operation and maintenance commitment. The deadline for submitting online bids is set for November 5, 2026.

The project involves the establishment of six distinct battery energy storage systems, each contributing to the overall capacity. Specific sites earmarked for development include 100 MW/400 MWh units in Uran, Koradi, Nashik, and Khaperkheda, alongside two smaller projects of 50 MW/100 MWh each in Chandrapur and Parli. These installations will be connected to Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd. (MSETCL) substations, ensuring efficient integration into the state's power grid.

Bidders are required to pay a processing fee of Rs. 10 lakh plus 18% GST, along with an Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) of Rs. 5 lakh per MW of the quoted capacity. This financial structure is designed to ensure serious participation in the tender process, reflecting the project's scale and importance in the region's energy landscape.

Historically, Maharashtra has seen significant advancements in battery energy storage, with companies like Oriana Power Limited and GK Energy Limited previously securing a combined capacity of 1,050 MW/2,100 MWh from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL). These firms have successfully established BESS projects under MSEDCL’s earlier tenders, which were awarded promptly, indicating a robust market for energy storage solutions in the state.

Looking ahead, the successful implementation of this BESS tender could play a crucial role in stabilizing Maharashtra's energy supply, particularly as the demand for renewable energy sources continues to rise. The upcoming months will be critical as bidders prepare their proposals, and MAHAGENCO evaluates submissions to select the most capable partners for this ambitious project.
