The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has successfully dismantled a sophisticated milk adulteration network in Pune district, revealing alarming levels of detergent and Nonylphenol Ethoxylate in milk samples. This investigation, part of a broader initiative against milk adulteration, was initiated following credible information regarding the distribution and use of synthetic substances in milk production.

The operation commenced on July 4, when a collaborative team from the FDA and Pune Rural Police executed a raid at M/s Navkar Distributors located in Avasari Khurd, Ambegaon taluka. During this raid, officials uncovered various adulterating agents, including whey powder, emulsifiers, and detergent, which were believed to be used to compromise the quality of milk. Numerous samples from brands such as Sonai, Milky Mist, and Prabhat Dairy were seized for further analysis, leading to the registration of a case at the Manchar Police Station.

In the course of the investigation, the main suspect disclosed the adulteration techniques employed, which included the use of skimmed milk powder to artificially enhance solids-not-fat (SNF) levels and the addition of edible oils to increase fat content. The FDA's laboratory analysis revealed the presence of Nonylphenol Ethoxylate in an emulsifier sample, which was also detected in milk samples collected from M/s Akash Dairy Farm in Manchar.

The findings from the FDA's analysis were concerning, with all six milk samples tested showing positive results for detergent. Additionally, the samples failed to meet the required fat and SNF standards. The investigation has since expanded to include the entire milk processing chain, linking the adulterated products back to M/s Indapur Dairy and Milk Products Ltd, also known as Sonai Dairy, highlighting a widespread issue within the supply chain.

As part of the ongoing crackdown, the FDA has registered two additional cases in Malshiras and has destroyed approximately 16,730 liters of contaminated milk, valued at around Rs 6.69 lakh. The FDA continues to pursue leads to identify all individuals and establishments involved in this extensive adulteration network, aiming to ensure the integrity of milk products in the region.
