In a significant enforcement action, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of ten food establishments in Mumbai, including outlets at Islam Gymkhana and canteens at JJ Hospital. This decision comes as part of a broader initiative to ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene standards across the state.
The crackdown was prompted by inspections that uncovered serious deficiencies, such as inadequate hygiene practices among staff, unclean premises, pest infestations, and improper food storage. The FDA reported that the establishments also failed to maintain essential records, including medical certificates and documentation of food safety training for employees.
Among the establishments affected are Huma Caterer and Nawab Juice Centre located at Islam Gymkhana, the Central Canteen within JJ Hospital, and Abrar Maiku Khan near JJ Hospital. Additionally, the FDA suspended the license of F3 Corporate Hospitality Services Pvt Ltd at DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering in Vile Parle, along with other eateries like La Pinoz Pizza in Santacruz and Golden Star Restaurant at Charni Road.
In a related operation, the FDA seized prohibited food products valued at Rs 79.29 lakh, bringing the total value of seized goods to Rs 1.09 crore. The operation led to the arrest of 13 individuals and the filing of 12 FIRs. Similar actions were reported in Nashik, where prohibited products worth Rs 92.71 lakh were confiscated, and in the Konkan division, where over Rs 10.88 lakh worth of prohibited items were seized.
Looking ahead, the FDA is expected to continue its rigorous inspections and enforcement actions across Maharashtra to uphold food safety standards. This ongoing initiative aims to protect public health and ensure that food establishments comply with necessary regulations, with further inspections planned in various divisions including Pune and Nagpur.
