The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business license of Blinkit, managed by M/s Blink Commerce Private Limited, at its Bhiwandi facility. This decision follows an inspection on October 21, which revealed serious regulatory breaches involving expired, damaged, and rejected food products valued at over ₹32.71 lakh.

During the inspection, officials found that Blinkit failed to provide adequate traceability for approximately 18,405 food items categorized as expired or damaged. The FDA expressed concerns regarding the potential public health risks posed by these unaccounted products, which could have been sold to consumers despite being unfit for consumption.

In light of these findings, the FDA has mandated an immediate halt to all licensed operations at the Bhiwandi site. Subsequently, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Bhiwandi Taluka Police Station against several Blinkit executives, including a whole-time director and facility managers, along with vendors involved in the disposal of scrap food items. The FIR cites multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, alleging a conspiracy to profit from the resale of expired food products.

This action against Blinkit is part of a larger initiative by the Maharashtra FDA, led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, aimed at enforcing stricter regulations on food safety. Recent operations have targeted various warehouses and disposal networks suspected of rerouting expired food products back into the market. Investigations have indicated that products marked for destruction by major food suppliers were allegedly redirected to local traders instead.

The implications of this crackdown are significant, as it underscores the ongoing regulatory challenges in ensuring food safety and the proper disposal of expired items. The FDA's actions reflect a commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing potentially hazardous food products from re-entering the consumer market. As investigations continue, further developments are anticipated regarding the enforcement of food safety regulations in Maharashtra.
