In a major enforcement operation, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported the seizure of banned pan masala and scented tobacco valued at ₹7.06 lakh in Mumbai. This action is part of a broader crackdown across the state, which has netted goods totaling approximately ₹3.11 crore. The operation, which took place on October 21, 2026, reflects the FDA's commitment to ensuring food safety and compliance with regulations.
The FDA's press release detailed the extensive nature of the operation, revealing that 32,061 litres of edible oil and 37,128 kg of various food products were confiscated statewide. In Mumbai, the authorities seized the prohibited items from a Tata Intra V10 tempo, with the vehicle itself valued at ₹3 lakh. A case has been filed against Uday Sundar Yadav from Sakinaka under relevant legal provisions, and samples of the seized products are undergoing analysis.
In Kandivali, inspections on October 15 led to the confiscation of food items worth ₹25,195, including spicy potato wafers and jalebi, suspected of containing unauthorized coloring agents. The FDA has also identified several establishments, including Arabian Shawarma Cafe and Bikaner Sweets, facing enforcement actions due to unsanitary conditions, such as unclean kitchens and improper food handling practices.
The crackdown has had significant implications for public health and safety in Maharashtra. The FDA's actions aim to protect consumers from adulterated and unsafe food products, which can pose serious health risks. The agency has encouraged the public to report any suspected food safety violations through its helpline or online portal, reinforcing its commitment to consumer protection.
Looking ahead, the FDA plans to continue its rigorous inspections and enforcement actions across Maharashtra. With ongoing efforts to combat food adulteration and ensure compliance with safety standards, the agency aims to maintain public trust and safety in food products available in the market.
