The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its enforcement actions against food safety violations, leading to the suspension of licenses for eight eateries in Mumbai. This crackdown resulted in the seizure of 1,394 kilograms of chemically ripened bananas, valued at Rs 67,814, alongside the destruction of 16,730 litres of milk found to be adulterated with detergent.
The FDA's operations targeted 11 establishments across Mumbai, focusing on lapses related to hygiene, food storage, and documentation. In addition to suspending the licenses of eight eateries, the agency also revoked the registration certificates of three others. These actions were prompted by various complaints and inspections revealing significant health and safety risks.
One notable incident involved a worker at a fruit stall in Navi Mumbai, who was caught using ethephon—a plant growth regulator known for leaving harmful chemical residues—on bananas. This led to the significant seizure of the fruit. Inspections at several eateries, including Nom Nom Restaurant and Satkar Caterers, uncovered serious hygiene issues such as improper food storage temperatures, pest infestations, and inadequate health records for food handlers.
The implications of these findings are considerable, as they highlight ongoing concerns regarding food safety in the region. The FDA's actions not only aim to protect public health but also serve as a warning to other establishments about the importance of adhering to food safety regulations. The agency has also seized banned food products worth Rs 31.14 lakh from three establishments, leading to the registration of three FIRs and the arrest of three individuals.
Looking ahead, the FDA plans to continue its rigorous inspections and enforcement actions to ensure compliance with food safety standards. With the recent operations, the agency is expected to increase public awareness about food safety and hygiene practices, encouraging consumers to be vigilant about the quality of food they purchase and consume.
