In a comprehensive statewide initiative, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confiscated food stock valued at ₹1.56 crore. This operation, reported on Saturday, involved the seizure of approximately 43.56 tonnes of food products along with 719.2 litres of milk and ghee, all suspected to be substandard, adulterated, or improperly labeled.
The FDA's enforcement actions were particularly pronounced in the Konkan division, which accounted for 9.99 tonnes of food stock worth ₹53.55 lakh. The Pune division followed closely, seizing 2.11 tonnes valued at ₹7.93 lakh. In Nashik, the agency confiscated 4,069 kg of food products and 62.2 litres of ghee, amounting to ₹8.25 lakh. Additionally, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division reported significant seizures of 26.84 tonnes valued at ₹64 lakh, while Nagpur saw the confiscation of 883.3 kg of oil worth ₹1.77 lakh.
The FDA also targeted prohibited food items, seizing goods worth ₹19.56 lakh in Pune, ₹4.22 lakh in Mumbai, and ₹19,090 in Nashik. Alongside these actions, the department destroyed 564 litres of milk found unfit for consumption. The FDA has pledged to continue its enforcement drives to uphold food safety standards and take action against establishments that violate regulations.
In a related move, the FDA suspended the licenses of seven food establishments in Mumbai after inspections revealed serious breaches of food safety norms. Violations included unsanitary kitchen conditions, improper food storage practices, use of unauthorized food colors, and lack of medical certificates for food handlers. These measures highlight the FDA's commitment to ensuring public health and safety in food consumption.
Looking ahead, the FDA plans to intensify its inspections and enforcement activities across Maharashtra, aiming to maintain stringent food safety standards. Stakeholders in the food industry are urged to comply with regulations to avoid penalties and ensure consumer safety.
