In a proactive measure to ensure food safety during the festive season, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confiscated approximately 1,190 kg of laddus and other goods valued at around Rs 1.73 lakh from a manufacturing unit in Pune on November 3. This action was prompted by reports of excessive food coloring and unsanitary conditions at the facility located in Kondhwa.

The FDA's intervention was guided by Commissioner of Food Safety Tukaram Munde and Joint Commissioner (Vigilance) Priti Tipre. The operation coincided with an event organized by 'The Poona Merchants Chamber' aimed at the annual sale and distribution of Diwali snacks, where Munde had previously stressed the importance of adhering to food coloring regulations.

FDA official Balaji Shinde reported that the raid revealed not only the presence of excessive food coloring but also significant lapses in hygiene standards. Samples from the laddus and boondi were collected for further analysis, and the FDA is currently pursuing additional actions based on the findings.

In a separate but related development, the Maharashtra FDA has suspended four officials following allegations of conducting unauthorized raids in Pune and Bhiwandi. This decision, approved by the Chief Minister, marks one of the most significant disciplinary actions taken against FDA personnel to date, with a departmental inquiry initiated against 21 officials.

Looking ahead, the FDA is expected to continue its rigorous enforcement of food safety regulations, especially during the festive season when the demand for sweets and snacks surges. The outcomes of the ongoing investigations and the analysis of the seized samples will likely influence future regulatory measures and public health policies in Maharashtra.
