Maharashtra FDA Chief Responds to Extortion Allegations by MP Raut

In response to allegations made by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut regarding extortion by officials of the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe stated that no complaints have been lodged so far. Raut had claimed that FDA personnel were pressuring hotels and restaurants with threats of license suspension to extract money from them.

Mundhe addressed the media, clarifying that without any formal complaints or evidence, the FDA cannot take further action. He mentioned, "I have not received any complaints so far that money has been asked for or that any business has been threatened or that there was an attempt to extort." He expressed a willingness to investigate if credible information is provided.

The FDA chief acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but reiterated that the absence of complaints limits the agency's ability to act. He noted that during appeal hearings, they routinely inquire if any officials have caused issues for businesses, but thus far, no one has reported such incidents. Mundhe stated, "If anyone complains or provides details, action will be taken."

Mundhe also highlighted his proactive approach towards combating corruption, mentioning that he had previously communicated with the Anti-Corruption Bureau to enhance vigilance. He affirmed the FDA's zero-tolerance policy towards corrupt practices, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement and oversight.

Looking ahead, the FDA is poised to monitor the situation closely. Mundhe's commitment to transparency and accountability suggests that any substantiated claims will be taken seriously, and the agency will act accordingly to uphold its integrity and public trust.
