Mahesh Asabe, a farmer from Akola village in Maharashtra's Solapur district, has revolutionized his family's agricultural practices, leading to an impressive annual turnover of ₹2 crore. This transformation began in 2013 when his father introduced dragon fruit cultivation on three acres of land, attracted by the crop's low water requirements, making it suitable for the region's dry climate.

Initially, the family invested around ₹9.9 lakh to procure 9,000 saplings from Bangladesh, positioning themselves among the first dragon fruit growers in Maharashtra. Their first harvest in the 2015-16 season yielded approximately 15 tonnes, generating ₹5 lakh in revenue. By 2017, the selling price of dragon fruit surged to between ₹150 and ₹250 per kilogram, significantly boosting their income.

Mahesh's educational background in Agricultural Engineering, complemented by an M.Tech and training in Israel and Vietnam, equipped him with essential knowledge in modern farming techniques and water management. He implemented innovative practices such as drip irrigation and farm ponds, enhancing water efficiency and overall productivity on the farm.

Today, Rukmini Farms has expanded to 60 acres, cultivating not only dragon fruit but also pomegranates, custard apples, and guavas. The annual production of dragon fruit alone reaches around 200 tonnes, contributing significantly to the farm's total revenue of ₹2 crore. Mahesh emphasizes the importance of scientific understanding in agriculture, which has been crucial in their journey.

The success story of Mahesh Asabe and his family illustrates how a single crop can transform agricultural enterprises. Their journey highlights the significance of investment, education, and innovative farming practices in achieving sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
