Rural Maharashtra is currently facing a critical water crisis, with 85 percent of its talukas suffering from severe drought conditions. This dire situation has been exacerbated by the ongoing dispute between the central and state governments regarding the Jal Jeevan Mission, a key initiative aimed at providing clean drinking water to rural households. Launched on August 15, 2019, the mission has seen no new project approvals in the last two years, leaving many villages without essential water supply.

The Jal Jeevan Mission was designed to alleviate the burden on women and families who often trek long distances to fetch water. The initiative aimed to ensure that every rural household has access to piped water. Initially, the mission was met with enthusiasm, leading to the registration of 51,560 projects between 2019-20 and 2023-24. However, approvals have sharply declined, with the highest number of approvals recorded in 2021-22. Since then, the approval process has come to a standstill, leaving many projects incomplete and villagers in distress.

Despite government claims that 90 percent of rural households have tap water connections, many residents report that these connections are either non-functional or do not provide a reliable water supply. As a result, villagers are forced to rely on expensive water tankers for their daily needs, including drinking and irrigation. This situation has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the Jal Jeevan Mission, as the reality on the ground starkly contrasts with official statistics.

Financially, the Jal Jeevan Mission has seen significant investments, with a total expenditure of Rs 33,269.6 crore since its inception. However, Maharashtra has received a disproportionately low allocation for the upcoming fiscal year, with only Rs 12.74 crore earmarked for 2025-2026. In comparison, other states have received much larger sums, raising questions about the prioritization of funding and resources.

Looking ahead, state officials are calling for urgent action to resolve the funding disputes and expedite the completion of water supply projects. Investigations are underway regarding the alleged mismanagement of funds, as officials seek to ensure that the mission fulfills its original promise of providing every rural household with a reliable water supply. The situation remains critical, and the residents of Maharashtra are eagerly awaiting tangible improvements in their access to water.
