In a significant move to improve cancer care, the Maharashtra government has officially included PET-CT scans in its public health insurance schemes, MJPJAY and PM-JAY. This decision, announced through a government resolution, aims to provide cashless access to these essential diagnostic tests for patients battling cancer, thereby alleviating financial burdens on underprivileged families across the state.

Historically, the inclusion of PET-CT scans was limited to only 44 cancer management packages. However, the recent policy revision has expanded this coverage to 63 distinct treatment packages. Additionally, the government has recognized PET-CT scans as a standalone diagnostic test for 13 specific types of cancers, where metabolic imaging is crucial for accurate initial staging. This change allows oncologists to begin targeted therapies without unnecessary delays, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

The resolution also addresses the high costs associated with diagnostic imaging, which often deterred patients from seeking timely evaluations. With the new standardized tariffs, the government has set reimbursement rates for various scans, including a whole-body PET-CT scan capped at Rs 20,400. Other rates include Rs 14,650 for brain scans and Rs 15,000 for specialized Gallium-68 scans. These measures are designed to ensure predictable reimbursement for healthcare facilities while minimizing out-of-pocket expenses for patients.

To maintain the integrity of the diagnostic process, the government has instituted stringent criteria for hospitals wishing to provide these scans. Only empanelled facilities with verified in-house PET-CT equipment and qualified personnel can conduct the tests. Furthermore, treating specialists must certify the medical necessity of each imaging study, and hospitals are required to upload clinical documentation and obtain prior approval before proceeding with the scans. This oversight aims to prevent misuse and ensure that patients receive appropriate care.

Looking ahead, the State Health Assurance Society is working on updating its Transaction Management System to facilitate efficient processing of cashless claims. This initiative is expected to streamline access to PET-CT scans for eligible beneficiaries under the MJPJAY and PM-JAY schemes, marking a significant advancement in cancer care in Maharashtra.
