Maharashtra Expands Health Coverage to Include PET-CT Scans
The Maharashtra government has added PET-CT scans to health insurance schemes, enhancing cancer diagnostic services.
PET-CT scans are now covered under MJPJAY and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY.
The inclusion aims to alleviate financial burdens for cancer patients.
Eligible patients can access scans for 13 specific cancer types.
In a significant move to improve cancer care, the Maharashtra government has announced the inclusion of PET-CT scans in the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) and Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). This initiative is designed to provide eligible cancer patients with access to vital diagnostic services while minimizing their out-of-pocket expenses.
The state’s Public Health Department has issued a Government Resolution (GR) that integrates PET-CT scans into 63 cancer treatment packages. These scans are essential for accurately detecting cancer, assessing its stage, and monitoring treatment responses. By adding these scans to the existing packages, the government aims to enhance the availability of advanced diagnostic tools for beneficiaries who qualify under the health schemes.
Additionally, PET-CT scans will now serve as a standalone diagnostic option for 13 specific cancer types. This means that eligible patients can access these scans without incurring the full costs, provided they meet the necessary package conditions. This strategic decision is expected to significantly ease the financial strain on patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Historically, many cancer patients faced financial challenges due to the high costs associated with PET-CT scans, often having to pay for these procedures out of their own pockets. The recent policy change aims to provide greater financial support to eligible beneficiaries, thereby facilitating better access to crucial cancer diagnostics. This initiative is seen as a vital step towards enhancing cancer care in Maharashtra and ensuring that patients and their families receive adequate financial protection.
Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government plans to monitor the implementation of these new provisions closely. Stakeholders anticipate that this expansion will not only improve patient outcomes but also encourage more individuals to seek timely medical attention, ultimately contributing to better cancer management across the state.
