In a significant move to enhance the governance of artificial intelligence initiatives, the Maharashtra government has established three distinct committees aimed at overseeing the implementation of its AI Policy 2026. This decision was formalized through a Government Resolution issued on Wednesday, which delineates the roles and responsibilities of each committee.

The State Level Steering Committee, chaired by the chief secretary, is tasked with providing strategic direction for the AI Policy's execution. This committee will include senior officials from various departments, including finance, industries, and education, ensuring a comprehensive approach to policy implementation. It is scheduled to convene at least twice a year to assess progress and make necessary adjustments.

Supporting the steering committee is the Executive Committee, led by the secretary of the electronics and information technology department. This body is responsible for approving incentives and subsidies for AI projects, coordinating efforts across multiple departments, and fostering partnerships with AI firms and research institutions. Additionally, the Executive Committee will conduct quarterly reviews to monitor the progress of ongoing projects.

Complementing these efforts is the Technical Committee, which will evaluate proposals for technical compliance and eligibility. This committee will recommend suitable projects to the Executive Committee for approval and will also oversee the monitoring of approved initiatives to ensure they meet established standards.

To facilitate the effective implementation of the AI Policy, an online portal will be launched, streamlining communication and project management. The overarching aim of the AI Policy, first announced on May 6, is to promote the adoption of AI technologies across government sectors and stimulate AI-driven initiatives throughout the state.
