Private hospitals must display treatment rates prominently in Marathi and English.
Hospitals are required to update rates immediately upon revision.
Special rates for foreign patients must also be displayed.
In a significant move to enhance transparency in healthcare, the Maharashtra government has mandated that all private hospitals and medical establishments display their treatment rates in both Marathi and English. This directive, issued by the state public health department on Friday, aims to prevent overcharging and minimize disputes between healthcare providers and patients.
The Government Resolution (GR) specifies that hospitals must display these rates at easily visible locations within their premises, ensuring that patients and their families can access this information without difficulty. The requirement includes updating the displayed rates immediately whenever there are changes, allowing patients to anticipate their medical expenses more accurately and make informed decisions regarding their healthcare.
To facilitate better communication, hospital staff at registration and billing counters are now required to assist patients in understanding the displayed rates and applicable charges. This initiative is designed to reduce confusion and complaints related to unexpected billing, thereby improving the overall patient experience in healthcare facilities.
Additionally, the directive includes provisions for displaying special treatment packages for foreign patients visiting India for medical care. This is aimed at enhancing pricing transparency for international patients, who often face challenges in understanding local billing practices.
The public health department has emphasized that compliance will be monitored rigorously, with authorities empowered to take administrative and legal action against any establishments that fail to adhere to these new regulations. This initiative follows recent instructions from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, reinforcing the importance of accountability and transparency in healthcare services across Maharashtra.
