Maharashtra Cyber has directed social media platform X to eliminate objectionable posts amid an ongoing cybercrime investigation.
Maharashtra Cyber has issued directives to X for content removal.
The action follows a FIR related to cyber offences in Navi Mumbai.
The investigation targets fraudulent accounts spreading defamatory content.
On October 21, Maharashtra Cyber took significant steps by formally instructing social media platform X to remove posts deemed objectionable. This directive comes as part of an ongoing inquiry into cyber offences, according to officials who confirmed the actions taken on Wednesday.
The investigation was initiated following a First Information Report (FIR) filed at the Nodal Cyber Police Station in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. The case is being handled by the Nodal Office, which serves as the primary authority for cyber-related crimes in Maharashtra. Charges include intentional insult and statements leading to public mischief under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with violations of the Information Technology Act.
Authorities have expressed concern over fraudulent accounts on X that have been disseminating defamatory allegations and offensive remarks. These posts not only undermine the dignity of women but also have the potential to incite public unrest, as highlighted by a Cyber official involved in the investigation.
As part of the ongoing probe, specific URLs and account information have been provided to X's grievance and compliance teams. The authorities have mandated the immediate removal of the offending content and requested subscriber logs and technical identifiers to facilitate further legal actions.
Looking ahead, the Maharashtra Cyber team is expected to continue its investigation, ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to address cyber offences effectively. The outcome of this inquiry could lead to stricter regulations for social media platforms operating in the region, emphasizing the importance of accountability in online spaces.
