A couple from Thane, Maharashtra, traveled to Bachhaipur village in Basti district on Thursday to locate a mother-son duo accused of defrauding them of jewelry and cash almost four years ago. The couple, Shama Parveen and her husband, made the trip in hopes of recovering their stolen valuables after years of searching.
Shama Parveen, a resident of Barkiya Compound in Bhiwandi, recounted that the accused had borrowed jewelry worth lakhs and Rs 38,000 in cash under the pretense of attending a wedding. They assured her that they would return the items after the event. Additionally, the mother-son duo reportedly borrowed Rs 7 lakh from a neighbor, Shabana Bano, with similar promises of repayment after selling ancestral land.
Upon learning of the couple's visit, the accused allegedly locked their home and fled the scene. This prompted Shama and her husband to approach the Chhawani police, where they filed a formal complaint seeking assistance in recovering their lost items. Shama expressed her frustration, stating that she had been searching for the duo for four years and felt compelled to take matters into her own hands.
Chhawani police station's officer, Rana Devendra Pratap Singh, confirmed that an investigation is underway. He indicated that further actions would depend on the findings of the inquiry, which aims to address the allegations of fraud and theft that have affected multiple victims.
The implications of this case extend beyond the immediate recovery of stolen goods. It highlights the vulnerabilities faced by individuals who lend money or valuables, often trusting acquaintances. As the investigation progresses, it may also shed light on a pattern of deceit that could affect others in the community, prompting a broader discussion on financial trust and security in personal relationships.
