Contractors across Maharashtra are set to hold protests on October 19, targeting district collector offices to voice their grievances regarding unpaid government dues, rising contractor suicides, and alleged harassment from political leaders and administrative officials. This announcement was made by the Maharashtra State Contractors Federation along with two other contractors' associations on Monday.

The contractors have expressed that they have been waiting for payments from the state government for the last two years, which has led to severe financial difficulties. They argue that the pressure from unpaid bills, coupled with alleged mistreatment by officials, has resulted in tragic outcomes, including suicides among contractors. Milind Bhosale, president of the contractors’ association, emphasized the dire situation, stating that the declaration of drought in the state further complicates their chances of receiving dues.

In their efforts to resolve these issues, the contractors have repeatedly reached out to the chief minister, deputy chief ministers, and various ministers overseeing public works, tribal development, and rural development. Despite their protests, marches, and hunger strikes, they claim the government has failed to address their concerns or even convene a meeting to discuss the matter. The contractors allege that government departments have undertaken projects worth nearly four times their available funding over the past few years, raising questions about budgetary management and prioritization.

The organizations have reported a total of nine contractor suicides, with the latest case emerging from Amravati. They have formally written to the Chief Minister, urging immediate action to address the critical issues facing contractors. The planned protests on October 19 are expected to take place at noon, with organizers warning that they will escalate their actions if their demands continue to be ignored.

The announcement of the protests was made by key figures including Milind Bhosale, Rajesh Deshmukh from the State Engineers Association, and Anand Todkari and Sharad Patil from the water supply contractors’ association. The contractors are determined to make their voices heard and seek resolution to their pressing concerns.
