New standards for rehabilitation are being implemented by the government.
The aim is to include local residents in the benefits of development projects.
In a significant address on Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured tribal communities in Palghar that their long-standing rehabilitation concerns would be addressed. Speaking to a gathering, he emphasized that development should not come at the cost of displacing local populations from their land and livelihoods. The CM's remarks came during the distribution of land record certificates to project-affected persons (PAPs), highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring that the benefits of development reach the original inhabitants of the region.
Fadnavis acknowledged the historical challenges faced by individuals displaced by various projects over the past three to five decades. Many of these individuals have endured prolonged hardships, with unresolved rehabilitation issues persisting for years. He stated that the government is actively working on new rehabilitation standards to rectify the shortcomings of previous policies, aiming to provide adequate infrastructure, basic amenities, and employment opportunities for those affected.
The Chief Minister stressed that the villages where displaced individuals are resettled must be equipped with essential facilities and infrastructure, ensuring that they have access to job opportunities. He remarked, "The benefits of development projects should not be limited to outsiders; local residents must also share in the prosperity generated by these initiatives."
Fadnavis expressed his determination to elevate Palghar to one of the top five districts in Maharashtra in terms of development. He reiterated that this goal cannot be achieved without the inclusion of tribal communities, farmers, agricultural laborers, and women in the development process. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of inclusive development, asserting that progress should benefit all segments of society, not just a privileged few.
Reflecting on the historical struggles of families relocated decades ago, Fadnavis empathized with their plight, stating, "You have endured a long period of hardship... I give you my word today that your period of hardship is over. A new dawn and a new path have begun for you." He also assured residents of Hanuman Nagar and Chandra Nagar that the government would prioritize improving their living conditions.
