Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Advocates for Marathi in AI Development

Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has urged for the enhanced incorporation of the Marathi language in Artificial Intelligence, highlighting the necessity of making knowledge and information accessible in Marathi across digital platforms. This appeal was made during the inauguration of the 'Classical Marathi Language Week' in Mumbai, which coincided with the celebration of 'Classical Marathi Language Honour Day'. Fadnavis stressed the importance of generating high-quality Marathi content for OTT platforms and social media to ensure the language's relevance in modern technology.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed the state government's commitment to the preservation and promotion of Marathi language and culture. He pointed out that the current Marathi dictionary published by the government contains approximately 300,000 words, proposing an ambitious goal to expand this vocabulary to 1.3 million words in future editions. Fadnavis also emphasized the need to safeguard literature that reflects various dialects, folk traditions, and unique linguistic features of Marathi.
In addition to Fadnavis's remarks, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced plans to establish the 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Global Marathi Centre' in London. He also revealed that the next World Marathi Literary Conference is set to take place in the city, further promoting Marathi literature on a global stage. This initiative aims to connect Marathi speakers worldwide and celebrate the language's rich literary heritage.
Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant provided insights into ongoing projects, including efforts to compile 100 dictionaries that encompass the diverse dialects spoken throughout Maharashtra. Furthermore, he mentioned the establishment of 'Marathi Skill Development Centres' at nine different locations, aimed at enhancing skills related to the Marathi language and culture.
As Maharashtra continues to embrace technological advancements, the push for greater use of Marathi in AI and digital content reflects a broader commitment to cultural preservation. The initiatives announced by the government are expected to foster a deeper appreciation for the Marathi language while ensuring its growth and relevance in an increasingly digital world.
