On October 10, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis convened a meeting with a central team assessing the ongoing drought situation in the state. The meeting aimed to address the severe impact of drought on agriculture, particularly on cotton, soybean, and tur crops, and to advocate for increased financial support from the central government.

The central team, which included Central Joint Secretary Muktanand Agarwal and several state ministers, reported a notable decrease in agricultural production during their inspection. They highlighted that the drought has not only affected crop yields but has also led to a decline in water availability, exacerbating the crisis for farmers and farm laborers across Maharashtra.

Fadnavis articulated the urgency of the situation, indicating that the agricultural sector is in a precarious state that could jeopardize the upcoming Rabi crop. He urged the central government to provide substantial financial assistance to mitigate the adverse effects on farmers and ensure their livelihoods are protected. The Chief Minister also mentioned that the state government has prioritized water reservations for drinking and livestock needs.

In his remarks, Fadnavis underscored the importance of safeguarding livestock during this challenging period and assured that the government is ready to implement a comprehensive plan should a drinking water shortage arise. He expressed appreciation for the central team's thorough assessment and noted that a preliminary report had already been submitted, with a final report expected soon.

Looking ahead, Fadnavis emphasized the necessity of taking decisive actions to address the crisis effectively. He called for collaborative efforts to transform the current challenges into opportunities for sustainable agricultural practices in Maharashtra.
