With the commencement of the 2026-27 sugarcane crushing season on October 15, authorities in Maharashtra are intensifying safety protocols for the transportation of sugarcane. The increase in cane-laden vehicles on roads has prompted police and transport officials to enforce stricter regulations aimed at minimizing road accidents. The Superintendent of Police in Latur, Amol Tambe, has issued a stern warning to sugar factory managements, stating that legal action will be taken if any accidents occur due to non-compliance with safety standards.

In a recent directive, Tambe emphasized the necessity for all sugarcane transport vehicles, including trucks, tractors, and bullock carts, to be equipped with high-quality reflectors and safety stickers. This measure is particularly crucial for ensuring visibility during nighttime operations. He stated, "If non-compliance with safety requirements results in an accident and loss of life, legal action will be initiated against the vehicle owners and the responsible sugar factory management under the applicable laws."

On the same note, the Baramati Sub-Regional Transport Office convened a special meeting to address safety concerns during the crushing season. Transport operators were reminded to adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations, especially when transporting sugarcane at night. Officials also highlighted the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and using loudspeakers at high volumes, which can distract drivers and lead to accidents.

The meeting included representatives from various sugar factories, where it was agreed that sugar factories should conduct inspections at their entry points to ensure compliance with safety measures. Sub-Regional Transport Officer Surendra Nikam called for awareness campaigns to educate drivers on road safety and accident prevention. He assured that enforcement teams would monitor compliance and take action against violators of traffic regulations.

The Latur district police reiterated that sugar factory managements had previously received written instructions regarding the installation of reflectors and safety stickers on transport vehicles. The authorities have now underscored the urgency of implementing these safety measures to prevent accidents. They urged all stakeholders, including sugar factory managements, vehicle owners, and drivers, to ensure that vehicles are properly documented and adhere to loading limits and speed restrictions, emphasizing that collective efforts are vital for enhancing road safety during this critical season.
