In a significant move towards maritime collaboration, Maharashtra's Minister for Ports and Fisheries, Nitesh Rane, met with Andhra Pradesh's Minister for Roads, Infrastructure, and Investments, B.C. Janardhan Reddy, in Vijayawada. The meeting, held at the Secretariat, focused on enhancing cooperation in areas such as ports, shipbuilding, fishing harbours, and logistics. Rane's interest in Andhra Pradesh's maritime practices marks a potential shift in how Maharashtra approaches its maritime development.

During the discussions, Andhra Pradesh officials outlined their ambitious plans for developing Greenfield ports, fishing harbours, and fish-landing centres, alongside port-led industrial initiatives and public-private partnership (PPP) projects. The state's new maritime policy aims to attract investments, bolster industries, and create job opportunities, which Rane found particularly appealing. He noted that the Greenfield ports, developed under a landlord model, could significantly increase private sector participation and revenue generation.

Janardhan Reddy elaborated on the state's vision to transform Andhra Pradesh into a maritime and logistics hub, with each Greenfield port projected to require an investment of approximately ₹4,500 crore, aiming for completion by 2027. The development plan includes port-based industrial clusters, warehouses, and logistics facilities, alongside promoting shipbuilding at strategic locations such as Duggarajapatnam and Machilipatnam, with existing agreements with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and Goa Shipyard.

The implications of this partnership extend beyond immediate economic benefits. By focusing on skill training for youth in shipbuilding, marine engineering, and logistics, both states aim to prepare a workforce that meets the demands of the maritime industry. Furthermore, Andhra Pradesh's innovative approach to developing fishing harbours through the maritime board, rather than the fisheries department, has piqued Maharashtra's interest, as it emphasizes infrastructure development without profit motives.

Looking ahead, the two states plan to establish a minister-led task force to accelerate infrastructure projects by addressing land acquisition and coordination challenges. They also aim to exchange best practices and technical expertise while exploring investment opportunities, highlighting the importance of collaboration among coastal states for mutual growth in the maritime sector.
