In a significant push for infrastructure development, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a target to complete at least 70 kilometers of metro lines by the year 2027. This announcement came during a review meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House, where Fadnavis emphasized the need to enhance the current year's completion goal for metro works from 36 kilometers to 50 kilometers by December 2026.
The review session focused on several key projects within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Metro Lines 2B, 5, 6, and 9, along with the Sewri-Worli elevated road connection. Fadnavis instructed officials to consider implementing a 12-hour road closure on Sundays if necessary to expedite girder work for Metro Line 2B, which runs between DN Nagar and Diamond Garden-Mandale. He stressed the importance of minimizing disruptions for commuters during this process.
To address labor shortages, Fadnavis mandated that at least 50% of the infrastructure work should incorporate mechanization. He also called for improved traffic planning for new road connections and requested technology-driven solutions to alleviate congestion at critical junctions, such as Vakola. Additionally, he highlighted the need for updated mapping of underground utilities to prevent delays and repeated excavations during construction.
The implications of these developments are significant for the residents of Mumbai and the broader Maharashtra region. The accelerated metro expansion is expected to enhance public transportation, reduce traffic congestion, and improve connectivity across the metropolitan area. The Sewri-Worli elevated road, in particular, is anticipated to ease traffic flow and provide a vital link between key areas.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister has set a deadline of May 31, 2027, for the Sewri-Worli elevated road connection and has urged faster land acquisition processes for Metro Line 6. He warned contractors of potential consequences for failing to meet project deadlines, underscoring the government's commitment to timely infrastructure development.
