In Belagavi, Karnataka, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has called on sugarcane farmers to exercise patience as the state government engages in discussions with the Central government and Maharashtra leaders regarding the pressing issue of sugarcane pricing. Speaking to the media near the Sri Mahalakshmi Temple in Udupi district, Shivakumar emphasized the government's commitment to finding a solution that balances the interests of both farmers and sugar factories.
The Chief Minister noted that the matter has been brought to the attention of Union government ministers, who have convened meetings to explore potential resolutions. He reassured farmers that the financial assistance previously announced for them would continue, reflecting the government's dedication to supporting the agricultural community.
As the agitation in Belagavi enters its third day, farmers are actively participating in a padayatra towards Hubballi, advocating for a minimum sugarcane price of Rs 5,500 per tonne and an increase in the minimum selling price of sugar to Rs 60 per kg. The protests are being led by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha state president Chunappa Pujeri and Shashikant Guruji, who are vocal about their demands.
Discussions between the Deputy Commissioner of Belagavi, Mohammed Roshan, and the protesting farmers have taken place, with the police commissioner also in attendance. Farmer leaders have urged the district administration to take action and expedite the resolution of their demands, emphasizing the need for immediate clarity on cane procurement prices from mill owners before the commencement of crushing operations.
The farmers insist that understanding the pricing structure is crucial for their operations as the season progresses. They are pressing the administration to address their concerns promptly to avoid further delays in the sugarcane crushing process, which is vital for their livelihoods and the local economy.
