India has officially launched its first export to New Zealand under the newly enacted free trade agreement, sending a JCB-18Z mini excavator manufactured in Pune, Maharashtra. This event marks a significant milestone as the bilateral trade pact takes effect, allowing Indian engineering products to enter the New Zealand market without any duties.

The trade agreement, which was finalized on April 27, 2026, after nine months of negotiations, is designed to eliminate tariffs on all Indian exports to New Zealand from day one. In addition to engineering goods, various sectors including pharmaceuticals, textiles, marine products, and chemicals will also gain immediate duty-free access, enhancing trade relations between the two nations.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating that it opens up new avenues for Indian businesses. New Zealand's Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay, who participated in the flag-off ceremony virtually, emphasized that the success of the agreement will be determined by the opportunities it creates for businesses in both countries.

Currently, India's trade with New Zealand is relatively modest, standing at approximately $1.2 billion annually. However, both nations have set an ambitious goal to double this figure to $2.4 billion by 2030, leveraging the tariff concessions provided by the agreement. The pact also includes provisions for 5,000 annual professional visas for skilled Indian workers, as well as work opportunities for students and extended post-study work rights.

Looking ahead, the implementation of this trade agreement is expected to foster stronger economic ties between India and New Zealand. With a focus on expanding trade across various sectors, both countries are optimistic about the potential growth in bilateral trade and investment opportunities in the coming years.
