The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in Mumbai and surrounding districts as temperatures soar. On October 9, 2026, the weather in Mumbai turned notably hot, with forecasts indicating dry conditions to follow. The alert extends to regions including Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and others along the western belt of Maharashtra.
The IMD's warning comes on the heels of the southwest monsoon's withdrawal from Mumbai, which was officially announced on October 3. Following this, temperatures have surged, with Santacruz recording a high of 37.6°C, which is 4.5°C above the seasonal average. The heatwave is expected to affect the region until at least October 14, with a gradual return to normal conditions anticipated by October 12.
Economic analysts are closely monitoring the situation, particularly regarding agricultural impacts and food inflation. Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist at CRISIL, highlighted that the risk of food inflation is increasing due to potential disruptions caused by the intensifying El Niño phenomenon. He emphasized the need for careful observation of both meteorological and macroeconomic data moving forward.
The yellow alert has implications for public health and safety, as residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The IMD has indicated that while the current heat conditions are concerning, they expect a return to normal weather patterns soon, with green warnings indicating no adverse weather expected by mid-October.
Looking ahead, the IMD will continue to monitor the weather closely, and any further updates will be communicated to the public. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and to adhere to safety guidelines during this heatwave period.
