In a significant move to support sugarcane farmers, the Indian government has announced the formation of a high-level committee within a week. This decision follows a meeting held in New Delhi between Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi, along with delegations from Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The meeting focused on various pressing issues faced by sugarcane farmers, including challenges at the ground level, inconsistencies in recovery figures reported by sugar mills, weighing procedures, wastage, laboratory testing, and crop insurance. The ministers recognized the need for immediate action to address these grievances and announced the formation of the committee to provide timely solutions.
The newly formed committee will consist of representatives from the Central Government, the state governments of Karnataka and Maharashtra, farmers' organizations, sugar mills, and expert scientists. This diverse group will thoroughly investigate all technical aspects related to sugarcane harvesting, recovery parameters, modern laboratory testing systems, and weighing accuracy. Their findings and recommendations will be submitted to the government within a specified timeframe.
This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the agricultural sector in Maharashtra and Karnataka, where sugarcane farming is a vital source of livelihood for many. By addressing the farmers' concerns, the government aims to enhance the overall efficiency and sustainability of sugarcane production in these regions.
Looking ahead, the establishment of this committee marks a crucial step towards resolving longstanding issues in the sugarcane industry. Farmers and stakeholders will be keenly awaiting the committee's recommendations, which could lead to substantial reforms in the sector and improved conditions for sugarcane growers.
