Five Injured in Gas Leak Incident at IIT Bombay Hostel

On October 9, 2023, a gas leak from a cylinder pipe caused a flare-up at Hostel No. 6 on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai, injuring five individuals, including two minors. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed the incident, which was reported to Rajawadi Hospital around 10:24 PM.
Emergency services, including police and BMC staff, quickly responded to the scene. According to the Medical Officer at Rajawadi Hospital, the injured included Ansh Ahirwar, 12, and Tahjib Aalam, 9, who were transferred to Kasturba Hospital, while Ishwar Singh, 37, was admitted to Rajawadi Hospital. The remaining two injured, Shivkumar Singh, 34, and Anilkumar Yadav, 23, were also moved to Kasturba Hospital. Fortunately, all five individuals are reported to be in stable condition.
In a related incident, a fire broke out at a labour camp in Navghar, Mulund East, linked to the BMC PAP Project for construction workers. Initial reports suggest that the fire may have started from a small blaze at the site, which subsequently led to the explosion of seven gas cylinders. Fortunately, all occupants were safely evacuated, and no casualties were reported.
Fire Brigade personnel were deployed to manage the situation, and firefighting efforts are currently ongoing. The BMC has assured that necessary arrangements have been made at the site, and further details regarding the incidents are being investigated.
Authorities are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding both incidents, with a focus on ensuring safety measures are reinforced to prevent future occurrences.
