The crackdown is part of a broader initiative to ensure food safety across Maharashtra.
In a significant move, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licenses of five Domino's Pizza outlets located in Pune and Kolhapur. This action follows inspections that uncovered alarming food safety violations, including the presence of live cockroaches and unsanitary conditions in food storage and preparation areas.
Earlier this week, FDA officials conducted inspections at over 50 Domino's outlets in the Pune division, revealing numerous irregularities in food handling and sanitation practices. The inspections highlighted a lack of proper equipment for managing vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, incomplete temperature records, and insufficient cleanliness in the outlets.
Among the specific violations noted were improper food storage, unpleasant odors in dining areas, and missing identification documents for food distribution staff. Additionally, delivery boxes were found left open on roadsides, and food waste was discovered in areas where pizza bases were prepared, raising serious concerns about hygiene standards.
The five affected outlets, operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Limited, are situated in Warje and Hingne Khurd in Pune, Rajarampuri and A Ward in Kolhapur, and Chakan in Pune district. The license suspensions were enacted on October 14 and 15, depending on the specific outlet. The FDA has committed to continuing its special inspection drive targeting hotels, restaurants, and food delivery services to ensure public access to safe and hygienic food.
This enforcement action is part of a larger food safety initiative in Maharashtra, overseen by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. In recent weeks, the FDA has seized large quantities of spoiled food, identified multiple violations, and ordered the closure of several establishments, including canteens and upscale restaurants. The department is actively working to enhance food safety standards across the state.
