Energy in Motion Ltd. (EIM) has officially opened its new electric heavy-duty vehicle manufacturing complex in Talegaon, Maharashtra. This facility will focus on the assembly of electric trucks, tractor-trailers, and dumpers, marking a significant step in the transition to electric commercial vehicles in India.

The establishment of this integrated complex comes after just over a year since the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU). It features an electric vehicle assembly line, a lithium-ion battery pack assembly unit, and an independent battery testing laboratory, all designed to streamline production and enhance battery technology.

Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director of EIM, expressed pride in the rapid development of the facility, attributing its success to the support from the Maharashtra government and various technology partners. The complex is expected to have an initial production capacity of 5,000 vehicles per year, with plans for a nationwide network of charging and battery swapping stations to facilitate the shift from diesel to electric transportation.

EIM's investment of ₹1,000 crore in Phase 1 of the project is set to create over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs in areas such as design, research and development, and IT. The company has collaborated with international partners, including BAIC Foton from China, known for its significant sales in electric heavy vehicles, and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a leader in battery manufacturing.

Looking ahead, EIM aims to establish a robust infrastructure for battery swapping and charging across major highways and industrial zones. These hubs will allow for quick battery swaps in under seven minutes, utilizing DC fast charging standards to accommodate a variety of electric vehicles, thereby supporting the broader adoption of electric heavy-duty transportation in India.
