Vulnerable women were allegedly recruited for egg donation under false pretenses.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has made a significant breakthrough in a money-laundering case linked to an illegal IVF racket in Maharashtra, seizing ₹29 lakh in cash during searches conducted at ten locations across Thane, Baramati, and Nashik. The operation, which took place last week, involved the freezing of bank lockers and mutual fund investments associated with the alleged illicit activities.
This investigation stems from reports of unauthorized practices in the stimulation, extraction, and sale of human eggs at various IVF and ART centers. The ED's searches included hospitals and fertility clinics, revealing a network that reportedly exploited financially vulnerable women through donor-supply agencies, offering them between ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 for their eggs.
The ED highlighted that these women were allegedly transported to different facilities across Maharashtra and beyond for egg retrieval, exposing them to significant medical risks. This alarming practice raises serious ethical concerns regarding the treatment of women involved in such schemes.
As the investigation progresses, the ED has also identified new donor agents connected to this racket and is actively pursuing leads to uncover the full extent of the operation. The implications of this case are far-reaching, potentially impacting public trust in fertility services and prompting calls for stricter regulations in the IVF sector.
Looking ahead, the ED is expected to continue its investigations, with further searches and interrogations planned. Authorities are likely to implement measures aimed at preventing such exploitation in the future, ensuring that vulnerable populations are protected from similar illegal activities.
