A decade after the implementation of a water conservation project funded by the late actor Nana Patekar, the village of Dhondalgaon in Maharashtra has become a model of sustainability, having eliminated its reliance on water tankers. The initiative, supported by Patekar's NAAM Foundation, has significantly transformed the agricultural landscape of the region, allowing farmers to cultivate crops more effectively and boosting local dairy production.
The NAAM Foundation adopted Dhondalgaon, located in the Vaijapur tehsil, in 2016. Prior to the project, the village faced severe water shortages, particularly during the dry season when water tankers were the primary source of supply. River expert Anand Asolkar noted that the village's historical significance, particularly during the Nizam era when it was known for its sweet limes, had diminished due to silted river barrages that hindered agricultural practices.
The implementation of the water conservation project has revitalized the village's agricultural output. Farmers are now able to grow multiple crops annually, a significant improvement from the previous limitations. Additionally, the dairy sector has seen a boost, with increased water availability leading to better livestock management and production.
The impact of Patekar's initiative extends beyond agriculture; it has fostered a sense of community resilience and sustainability among the villagers. The success of this project serves as a beacon for other regions facing similar water scarcity issues, demonstrating the potential for effective water management strategies.
Looking ahead, the community is committed to maintaining the gains achieved through this project. Continued efforts in water conservation and sustainable farming practices are planned, ensuring that Dhondalgaon remains a tanker-free village for years to come. The legacy of Nana Patekar's contributions will continue to inspire future initiatives aimed at improving water security in rural Maharashtra.
