Cyclone Expected to Form Over Bay of Bengal by Monday
A developing weather system is projected to intensify into a cyclonic storm, primarily affecting Andhra Pradesh while Maharashtra faces limited impact.
A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is likely to become a cyclonic storm by Monday.
Maharashtra is expected to experience minimal rainfall, primarily in peripheral regions.
The system's trajectory will determine its impact, with significant effects anticipated in Andhra Pradesh.
A weather system currently situated over the Bay of Bengal is forecasted to strengthen into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning. According to GP Sharma, president of meteorology and climate change at Skymet Weather, this system will likely move towards the Andhra Pradesh coastline in the coming days, with limited repercussions for Maharashtra.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a well-defined low-pressure area over the east-central and adjacent southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to evolve into a depression on Saturday, followed by a deep depression on Sunday, and finally a cyclonic storm by Monday. The system is projected to travel west-northwest and reach the Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of October 28.
Sharma emphasized that it is premature to determine the exact path of the cyclone and its potential effects, as these will depend on its movement and intensity. However, he indicated that Maharashtra is unlikely to see substantial rainfall from this system, with any effects likely confined to the state's peripheral regions, particularly parts of Vidarbha near Chhattisgarh and Telangana. He noted, "Maharashtra will, if at all, have very limited impact."
The ongoing dry spell in Maharashtra is not expected to be alleviated by this weather system, as Sharma stated that there will be no significant recovery in rainfall. He mentioned that the cyclone is anticipated to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast, with its influence potentially extending into Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and adjacent areas of Vidarbha. After moving inland, the system is expected to weaken.
As of now, the IMD has not issued any rainfall forecasts for Maharashtra related to this developing weather system, indicating that residents should prepare for continued dry conditions in the near future.
