In a significant move, the Congress party has announced plans to amplify its protests across Maharashtra, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) controversy. The directive comes from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), as party members aim to mobilize support at the grassroots level.
On Monday, members of the INDIA bloc, including several senior opposition leaders, marched to the Supreme Court to express their dissent regarding the SIR process. Following this demonstration, Congress MPs, MLAs, and district chiefs from Maharashtra traveled to New Delhi to participate in the protest and strategize further actions. During their visit, they received instructions to enhance their agitation efforts back in Maharashtra, where the contentious SIR exercise is currently being implemented.
Sirivella Prasad, the Congress in-charge for Maharashtra, emphasized the importance of gathering feedback from the party's 62,000 booth level agents (BLAs) across the state. He stated that the party intends to utilize the discrepancies identified in the SIR process to hold meetings at the block level, aiming to engage the public and garner their support against the ongoing issues.
The Congress party is not only focusing on Maharashtra but has also devised a nationwide strategy to conduct protest rallies extending from New Delhi to every tehsil. Local administrative units have been tasked with organizing coordinated protests throughout the state during October, highlighting the party's commitment to addressing the SIR dispute.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Harshwardhan Sapkal reiterated the party's stance, claiming that Congress has uncovered a troubling alliance between Gyanesh Kumar and the ruling BJP. He asserted that the party will take this issue to every district, emphasizing that the public is becoming increasingly aware of the misuse of power by the ruling party. The Congress intends to persist in its efforts until justice is achieved regarding the SIR controversy.
