On October 6, 2023, Amravati recorded a staggering maximum temperature of 39.6°C, making it the hottest location in Maharashtra for the month. This reading is approximately seven degrees higher than the normal temperature for the region, indicating an unusual heat wave affecting the state. Pune also experienced a significant rise, with temperatures reaching 35.7°C, marking one of the hottest October days in the city’s recorded history.
The temperature spike in Amravati was closely followed by Malegaon, which recorded 38.4°C, about 5.9 degrees above the seasonal average. Various weather stations across Vidarbha, Marathwada, and central Maharashtra noted maximum temperatures ranging from 2°C to 5°C above normal levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted that Pune's temperature was 4.4 degrees above normal, making it the highest since 2002, when the city recorded 36.1°C.
The rise in temperatures coincides with the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from most parts of Maharashtra, leading to dry weather conditions across the state. Since the beginning of October, clear skies and minimal rainfall have contributed to elevated daytime temperatures in various regions. SD Sanap, a senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, noted that the lack of cloud cover and direct sunlight exposure are key factors driving the temperature increase.
The temperature in Amravati has seen a sharp increase, rising from 35°C on October 5 to 39.6°C within just 24 hours. This sudden change underscores the intensity of the current heat wave. The IMD forecasts that Pune and surrounding areas will continue to experience dry and hot weather for the next three to four days.
Looking ahead, residents of Maharashtra should prepare for continued high temperatures as the dry spell persists. The IMD will monitor the situation closely, providing updates on weather patterns and any potential changes in conditions. With the current trend, it is crucial for the public to stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses during this unusually warm October.
