In a remarkable agricultural success story, Prasad Ramchaware, a 28-year-old from Akola, Maharashtra, has transformed a two-acre dragon fruit farm into a thriving business, generating an annual income of approximately ₹15 lakh. Prasad's journey into farming began during the COVID-19 pandemic when he and his father sought new opportunities in agriculture, leading to the establishment of his dragon fruit venture in July 2021.
Initially intrigued by dragon fruit after tasting it in 2017, Prasad researched its cultivation methods through online resources. Although he initially doubted the viability of growing the fruit in Vidarbha's hot climate, he later decided to pursue it. He sourced around 6,300 plants from Solapur and Gujarat, investing around ₹3 lakh in the plantation.
Prasad's first harvest in 2022 was a significant milestone, as his plants began producing fruit just 11 months after planting, surpassing expectations. During the six-month harvest season, he collected nearly two tonnes of dragon fruit, earning about ₹1.5 lakh. Notably, he shared much of his harvest with friends, family, and fellow farmers who visited his farm, emphasizing community support.
Today, Prasad oversees approximately 17 acres of farmland across four locations, cultivating a diverse range of crops. His dragon fruit plantation, which spans two acres, includes around 6,400 plants of various varieties, such as Jumbo Red and Israeli Yellow. Additionally, he grows timber trees, seasonal vegetables, and traditional crops, including custard apples and mangoes, showcasing his commitment to sustainable farming practices.
Looking ahead, Prasad aims to expand his agricultural ventures further while continuing his education in pharmacy. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring farmers, demonstrating the potential of innovative farming techniques and the importance of community in agricultural success.
