DMIHER has a long history in the region, established in 1990.
In a significant move, the Adani Group has renamed the Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research (DMIHER) to the Adani Institute of Higher Education and Research (AIHER) in Wardha, Maharashtra. This change was formalized by the Union education ministry on September 22, marking a new chapter in the Adani Group's expansion into the education and healthcare sectors.
DMIHER, which was established in 1990 and gained deemed-to-be university status in 2005, has been a key player in the educational landscape of Wardha and the Vidarbha region. The institute is part of a larger network founded by Datta Meghe, a former MP and Maharashtra minister. Under the new partnership, Priti Adani, chairperson of the Adani Foundation, has been appointed as the chancellor, with the Foundation taking on the role of the sponsoring trust.
The Adani Group's healthcare ambitions are bolstered by this partnership, which integrates DMIHER's existing infrastructure of 15 institutes, five teaching hospitals, and two medical colleges into its growing portfolio. The group also operates the Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences and has plans for additional medical colleges in its proposed Health Cities in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, along with a substantial investment in Kolkata's Adani Arogya Mandir project.
This collaboration aims to create a global center of excellence in affordable healthcare education and delivery. Priti Adani has expressed a vision for AIHER that emphasizes the integration of medicine with technology and public policy, focusing on innovative curricula and interdisciplinary approaches. The partnership is designed to leverage the strengths of both the Adani and Meghe groups, ensuring that the institute maintains its commitment to public service while enhancing its educational and healthcare capabilities.
Looking ahead, the Adani Group has not disclosed specific financial commitments for DMIHER but indicated that the Adani Foundation will support future expenditures as needed. The focus remains on expanding the institution's capabilities in healthcare delivery, medical education, and research, while preserving its core values and autonomy. The partnership is expected to foster mutual learning and excellence in both healthcare and academics, contributing to the broader goal of improving healthcare outcomes in the region.
