In a remarkable medical achievement, three extremely premature infants have defied the odds and returned home after receiving intensive care at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Nagpur. Among them, one baby, who weighed a mere 480 grams at birth, has brought immense joy to their families following a challenging journey of survival.

These infants were born significantly earlier than the typical 40-week gestation period, necessitating immediate admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for life-saving interventions. Two of the babies were born at AIIMS Nagpur, while the third was admitted in critical condition just days after birth. After nearly three months of round-the-clock care, all three infants were discharged, marking a significant milestone in their recovery.

Dr. Prashant Joshi, the executive director of AIIMS Nagpur, highlighted the extraordinary nature of their survival, stating, "These babies were born at the very edge of survival, and every day of their journey was a triumph of teamwork." Hospital administration confirmed that one infant, born at just 24 weeks and weighing 600 grams, is the youngest survivor by gestational age treated at the NICU, while another, weighing only 480 grams, is the smallest survivor by birth weight.

The infants faced numerous severe complications, including patent ductus arteriosus, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. A dedicated multidisciplinary team, including neonatologists and nursing staff, worked tirelessly to monitor and treat these conditions, enabling the infants to gradually gain strength and recover.

The third infant, born at 26 weeks and weighing 630 grams, was brought to AIIMS Nagpur after a difficult start to life. The significance of this baby’s survival is profound for the family, as the mother had previously experienced the loss of seven pregnancies. Seeking specialized care, she traveled from outside Maharashtra to ensure her baby received the best possible treatment. After weeks of intensive care, the baby was discharged in good health, showcasing the effectiveness of the hospital's neonatal care.

Dr. Nishant Banait, a member of the neonatology team, emphasized the importance of teamwork in the recovery of such fragile infants, stating, "For infants this small, every gram and every hour matters." The commitment of the staff and the trust of the parents played a crucial role in the successful outcomes of these cases. Dr. Joshi commended the neonatology team for their dedication and reaffirmed the institute's commitment to providing world-class care for the most vulnerable newborns, regardless of their background.
