In a devastating incident early Friday morning, three devotees lost their lives when a mini truck they were traveling in plunged nearly 100 feet into a gorge at Mahur Ghat. The victims were returning to Yavatmal after visiting the Renuka Mata Temple in the neighboring Nanded district. The accident took place around 5 AM at a sharp bend behind the Public Works Department office, raising serious concerns about road safety in the area.
The six individuals in the vehicle, who were employees at a local furniture shop, had set off on their return journey in the early hours. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to the blinding glare from the headlights of an oncoming vehicle. This unfortunate event highlights the dangers posed by the lack of safety features, such as crash barriers, at critical points along the road.
Among the deceased were Rahul Thakare and Pritam Pradhan, who died instantly at the scene, while Babarao Tekam succumbed to his injuries later at a rural hospital. The driver, Pratik Adkine, along with passengers Datta Meshram and Yashwant Patil, survived the fall but sustained injuries. Emergency services were alerted through the helpline 112, and local residents assisted in rescuing the injured and transporting them to medical facilities.
This tragic accident has reignited discussions about road safety in Mahur Ghat, especially during the ongoing Navratri festival, which attracts numerous devotees seeking blessings at the temple. Local motorists and residents have repeatedly expressed their concerns regarding the absence of crash barriers at perilous bends, urging authorities to prioritize the implementation of road safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
As the investigation continues, local officials are expected to assess the situation and consider necessary safety enhancements. The community is hopeful that this incident will prompt immediate action to improve safety standards in the region, particularly as the influx of visitors during festival seasons poses additional risks on the roads.
