The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a tender process valued at Rs2,553.84 crore to expand a vital 42-kilometer segment of NH-53 from Nagpur to Bhandara into a six-lane highway. This development is crucial for improving the highway's connectivity, particularly as sections like the Bhandara bypass and an area near Mauda have already undergone widening.

NHAI official Abhijit Jichkar confirmed that the increasing vehicular traffic on this route has made the expansion necessary. He noted that land acquisition for the project has been completed, and groundwork is set to commence immediately after the tender is awarded.

The planned upgrades will feature several enhancements, including flyovers, underpasses, service roads, and a modern drainage system. Existing bridges along the route will be either widened or reconstructed as needed. The design aims to separate local traffic from long-distance vehicles, thereby reducing congestion at busy intersections through the addition of flyovers and underpasses.

This stretch of NH-53 serves as a critical transport corridor linking Nagpur with Bhandara and extending further into Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal. The six-laning of this highway is anticipated to significantly boost its carrying capacity and alleviate traffic bottlenecks, enhancing overall travel efficiency.

The construction phase is projected to last approximately 30 months, although the actual completion date will depend on the timely awarding of the contract and the commencement of construction activities.
