A significant fire engulfed a three-storey building housing the Sunny Cycle Store at Jaystambh Chowk in Badnera on Monday morning, leading to extensive damage and raising safety concerns. The blaze, which began around 8 AM, took fire crews approximately six hours to control, as it rapidly spread due to the flammable materials stored within the premises.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that smoke was first observed emanating from the rear of the building, which was closed at the time. The fire quickly escalated, fueled by a large inventory of cycles, tyres, and oil drums. Residents reported hearing loud explosions as the oil ignited, causing panic among nearby traders and residents in this bustling commercial area.
Initial reports suggest that only two fire tenders arrived at the scene nearly an hour after the alarm was raised, leading to criticism of the Amravati Municipal Corporation's fire department. Witnesses claimed that the fire tenders lacked sufficient water and equipment to effectively combat the flames on the upper floors. Firefighters struggled to manage the situation, battling the fire from the ground and first floors while the flames spread to the higher levels.
As the fire raged, local shopkeepers attempted to salvage their goods, pulling items onto the street. The mayor, deputy mayor, and municipal officials arrived promptly to oversee the situation, while the Badnera police cordoned off the area and evacuated residents as a precautionary measure. Power supply to the vicinity was also cut off to prevent further hazards.
Despite the extensive damage, which shop operator Sunil Kanhaiyalal Barlani estimated at Rs 2.5 crore, no casualties were reported. Local dairy operator Sunil Barlani confirmed that residents were unharmed, but the incident has sparked discussions about the need for improved fire safety measures in the region. Moving forward, local authorities are expected to review the fire response protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
