In Prabhag 38, Nagpur, the construction of a bridge worth ₹48 lakh has been delayed for several months, primarily due to the relocation of underground utilities. Residents of Dadaji Nagar, Swastik Nagar, and nearby areas are expressing frustration as they navigate damaged roads and inadequate connectivity, despite having raised concerns with local authorities.
The bridge's construction, which commenced in March, faced initial delays from a 500mm-diameter water pipeline that obstructed progress. Although this pipeline has been successfully moved, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has now identified an electric cable that also requires relocation before work can continue. A senior NMC official from the Laxmi Nagar zone confirmed that the process to shift the cable has begun, but the ongoing sequence of obstacles has led to significant delays.
This situation has prompted questions regarding the adequacy of the initial project planning and whether underground utilities were properly mapped in the detailed project report (DPR). As the project remains stalled, residents are forced to take a detour of nearly 2 kilometers, further complicating their daily commutes.
The infrastructure crisis extends beyond the bridge itself, with roads that were excavated nearly a year ago for sewage pipeline work under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) still unrepaired. Potholes and uneven surfaces have made travel hazardous, especially during the monsoon season when rainwater collects in the excavated areas. Residents have voiced their concerns about the lack of progress, despite previous assurances from civic officials.
The political implications of this delay are also noteworthy, as two of the three corporators representing Prabhag 38 belong to the Congress party, while the NMC is governed by the BJP. Residents allege that their complaints have not been adequately addressed due to this political divide. They have submitted a memorandum to Mayor Neeta Thakre, seeking a timeline for the completion of the bridge and road repairs, but five months later, they report no substantial progress. Local residents are urging the civic administration to enhance coordination among agencies to prevent further delays in infrastructure projects.
