In a significant move, the OBC Sakal Mahamorcha has declared a Bharat Bandh on November 2, 2023, to advocate for the inclusion of a separate column for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in the upcoming caste-based census. The announcement was made during a meeting held in Nagpur, led by senior politician Vijay Wadettiwar, who emphasized the importance of this demand for the OBC community.

The meeting, which saw participation from representatives of OBC organizations across 18 states, concluded with plans for a national coordination committee to be established. This committee aims to unify efforts across states, with its inaugural meeting set to take place in Hyderabad, although a specific date has yet to be confirmed. Wadettiwar reiterated the necessity of an independent OBC column in the census, stating that it is crucial for accurately understanding the population dynamics of the community.

To garner support for their demands, the Mahamorcha will initiate a series of actions, including submitting memoranda and pamphlets to Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) from October 12 to 18. Additionally, memoranda will be presented to district collectors on October 15, followed by district-level protests scheduled for October 25. This strategic approach aims to mobilize political backing for their cause.

Wadettiwar clarified that the OBC community's fight is not against any other group but is focused on ensuring equitable representation and benefits as promised by the Constitution. He stressed that understanding what constitutes a fair share necessitates accurate population data, which can only be provided through a caste-based census. The government had previously committed to conducting such a census, and the OBC leaders are calling for this promise to be fulfilled.

Looking ahead, the Mahamorcha plans to escalate their efforts with a major rally in Delhi on November 15, under the slogan “Chalo Delhi.” This march is intended to further press their demands and highlight the urgency of their cause. The OBC Sakal Mahamorcha is determined to continue its advocacy until their request for a dedicated column in the census is realized, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding caste representation in India.
