Negligence Charges Filed After Godhani Chlorine Leak Incident

In a significant development, Mankapur police have initiated legal proceedings against a contractor and a chlorine tonner supplier for negligence related to a chlorine leak at the Godhani water treatment facility. This incident, which occurred on August 24, resulted in the hospitalization of more than 50 individuals, prompting the district collector to order an inquiry and subsequent action against those responsible.

The complaint, filed by officials from Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), outlines serious allegations including the negligent handling of chlorine gas, which is a hazardous substance. The charges also encompass actions that endangered lives, caused physical harm, and created a public nuisance due to the leak from a 900kg chlorine tonner that was left unsecured around midnight.

District collector Kumar Ashirwad's directive for an inquiry revealed alarming deficiencies in safety protocols at the plant. Senior inspector Haresh Kalsekar of Mankapur police stated that preliminary investigations indicate that negligence was a key factor in the incident. He noted that there were inadequate arrangements to manage the gas leak, which could have mitigated the potential harm.

Further probing uncovered critical safety lapses, including the absence of gas sensors and alarms, a lack of a neutralization system, insufficient protective gear for workers, and no established emergency response plan. The tonner was also found to be stored in an open area, raising serious concerns about safety practices at the facility.

As the investigation continues, authorities are considering the involvement of some MJP officials in the negligence case. Police plan to summon the accused and relevant personnel for questioning, with the aim of compiling a robust chargesheet to present to the court as soon as possible.
