In a significant move towards modernizing infrastructure, the Public Works Department (PWD) of Nagpur is set to introduce precast concrete roads, beginning with a 250-meter segment on the Mhalgi Nagar-Hudkeshwar corridor. This innovative approach, likened to 'Lego-style' construction, allows for panels to be manufactured off-site and assembled quickly, minimizing the time roads remain closed to traffic.

Historically, conventional cement concrete roads have required lengthy curing periods, leading to considerable delays and traffic disruptions. The PWD has previously trialed precast roads in rural areas and outskirts of Nagpur, with plans to expand this technology if the initial implementation proves successful. This method is particularly advantageous for busy routes where traditional construction methods have caused significant inconvenience to commuters.

Currently, the work order for the project is pending due to the model code of conduct, but officials anticipate that construction will begin within a month once the necessary approvals are secured. The PWD intends to execute the project in phases, completing one half of the road at a time to ensure that traffic continues to flow smoothly, especially since the corridor serves multiple educational institutions and healthcare facilities.

The existing road has not seen major repairs in the last eight to ten years, with the last patchwork done approximately seven years ago. Complications in repair work arise from the presence of underground utilities, including electric cables, water pipelines, and traffic signal wiring, which pose risks during excavation. The PWD believes that the precast construction method will alleviate these issues by reducing the need for extensive digging.

As the project moves forward, the PWD is currently in the process of selecting contractors, emphasizing quality assurance as a priority before commencing work. This initiative not only aims to enhance the road infrastructure in Nagpur but also sets a precedent for future construction projects in the region.
