In a troubling incident in Nagpur, a 16-year-old girl unexpectedly gave birth at home after attempting to terminate her pregnancy using methods found on YouTube. The situation escalated when her 18-year-old classmate was arrested and charged with rape following the delivery. The girl had reportedly been consuming herbal concoctions and abortion pills for weeks, guided by the boy's misguided attempts to find solutions online instead of seeking professional medical help.
The girl went into labor on a Monday, and her condition worsened post-delivery, prompting her family to rush her to a government hospital. The newborn was subsequently taken to a private facility for care. Medical staff at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) alerted the authorities when they noticed severe complications in the girl after giving birth, highlighting the risks associated with unregulated abortion attempts.
According to the Pachpaoli police, both the accused and the victim were students at the same school in north Nagpur. They reportedly engaged in sexual relations last year while the boy's family was away, and he continued to have relations with her, promising to marry her. This relationship and the subsequent pregnancy led to the current legal situation.
The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) for rape on Thursday under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Senior Inspector Jeetendra Bobde indicated that while the accused may have recently turned 18, he was a minor during the initial alleged sexual encounter, which will be crucial in determining the legal proceedings.
Authorities are finalizing the legal processes and ensuring that the survivor receives necessary counseling and psychological support. The case will also be referred to the child welfare committee to provide further assistance to the victim, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding minors in such distressing situations.
