Nagpur is grappling with significant traffic congestion as the number of registered vehicles has surged to 32.42 lakh, transforming the city’s once smooth traffic flow into a daily struggle for motorists. This increase in vehicular population has led to traffic jams becoming a common occurrence, diminishing Nagpur's reputation as a motorist-friendly destination.

Data from the three Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) indicates a consistent rise in vehicle registrations over the past six years. The City RTO (MH-31) leads with 15.08 lakh vehicles, followed by the Rural RTO (MH-40) with 9.19 lakh and the East RTO (MH-49) with 7.83 lakh. The figures highlight the rapid growth in vehicle numbers, with the East RTO recording a remarkable increase from 38,272 new registrations in the financial year 2020-21 to 70,673 in 2025-26, marking an 85% rise. Similarly, registrations at the City RTO more than doubled during the same period.

In total, the three RTOs registered 1,75,282 vehicles in 2025-26, a significant jump from 94,286 in 2020-21. The first half of the 2026-27 fiscal year alone saw 86,648 new registrations, averaging about 475 vehicles added daily. These numbers reflect only those registered within Nagpur, not accounting for the thousands of vehicles from neighboring districts and states that contribute to the traffic burden.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar, the surge in vehicle numbers is a primary factor behind the traffic jams. He noted that while Nagpur's traffic is still manageable compared to other cities of similar size, challenges such as increased migration, ongoing infrastructure projects, and inadequate parking facilities exacerbate the situation. Mirkhelkar emphasized that enhancing public transport and effective traffic management could significantly alleviate congestion.

Traffic congestion is prevalent on major thoroughfares, busy intersections, and commercial areas, with slow-moving traffic even during off-peak hours. Although new flyovers and wider roads have improved connectivity, the relentless influx of vehicles continues to strain the available road space. Experts advocate for a multifaceted approach that includes better traffic management, enhanced public transport options, and stricter parking regulations to mitigate the growing congestion issues in Nagpur.
